Okinawa has its own original culture that differs from the Japanese mainland. There are also many differences between the islands, Ishigaki and the Yaeyama islands have their own set of spirits and small gods.

The Shisa (シーサー Shīsā)  is a creature from Okinawan folklore that looks like a cross between a dog and a lion. If you take a walk in Ishigaki, or on any of the Okinawan islands, it is hard not to notice the many Shisa guarding both rooftops and house entrances. Shisa is believed to ward off evil and there are many folktales about them.
